Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to celebrate World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney in July.
This hugely popular event first held in Rome in 1986, will also mark the first visit to Australia of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.
Issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965, only 500,000 coin will be issued.
The coin’s Vatican approved reverse depicts His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI and an official WYDSYD08 logo.
The coins coloured reverse depicts a Vatican approved portrait of Pope Benedict and a representation of the official WYD08 logo. The inscription World Youth Day Sydney 2008 appears on the border encirculing the design, which also incorporates the Perth Mint’s “P” mintmark.
